Latest generation A-class has been updated gently in appearance while the technical bits have undergone major transformations. Among other things, the engines have become more economical and top-end AMG variant comes with more power.
Mercedes A-class has a clean appearance, which is not a giant leap in update procedure. In the front, noted is a new bumper and splitter. Road assist headlights are available and LED headlamps are available as optional package. Behind the car, the taillight design looks same but inner elements are completely new. The diode loops are arranged to provide a distinct look in the dark.
Inside, the changes are also neat. The new steering wheels catches the eye instantly and updated infotainment 8-inch display is now detachable. It is now compatible with both Android and Apple CarPlay. All inner elements such as instruments, buttons and knobs are reworked to provide an upgraded look. The materials used inside are also of very good quality.
Once you lift the short, sloping hood, you will see that Mercedes had made major changes in the engine department. On the petrol side, you will note a new entry level model A160. Earlier it was A180 as a base petrol variant. A160 delivers 103 hp and 133 lb-ft of torque. It emits only 119 gm/km of CO2. Similar to previous model A180 BlueEfficiency Edition is also available and is more economical and cleaner than before. A200 and A220 4MATIC are other models available under 200 hp. A sportier A250 4MATIC with 211 hp and A250 sport 4MATIC with 218 hp are also available. The top of line is AMG version, now named as Mercedes-AMG A45 4MATIC instead of previous A45 AMG 4MATIC. It is not just the name change but the power has been increased by 21 hp. The Mercedes technical team had managed to squeeze 381 hp from tiny potent 2.0-liter turbo petrol motor. The torque has also increased from 450 Nm to 475 Nm. The engine is coupled with seven-speed dual clutch transmission that enables the car to achieve 0-60 mph in 4.2 seconds. It is also said that Mercedes will later introduce AMG S-version i.e. Mercedes-AMG A45 S 4MATIC with 400 hp.
The diesel engine had also received nomenclature change and no longer will they come with CDI badge. Instead only «d» will be used. The entry level model 160d comes with same 90 hp and fuel efficiency as the engine it replaces. The figures of 180d with 109 hp also remains same. There is a new economical version called A180 D BlueEfficiency edition with better mileage and lower 89 gm/km of CO2. Other diesel engines available in the range are A200 d 4Matic with 136 hp and A220 d 4Matic with 177 hp. The prices of new 2016 Mercedes A-class models are not announced yet. The car will be launched at upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show.
