For several years it has been rumored that BMW will venture into MPV segment with a front wheel drive model. The wait is over and finally we have all new BMW 2 series Active Tourer. The latest model codenamed F 45 will be available in BMW showrooms later this year. The new 2 series active Tourer is based on UKL platform which forms the basis for the Mini cars. The new car measures 4340 mm in length, 1800 in width and has a height of 1550 mm which is almost similar to its main rival Mercedes B class. Side profile is slightly lower than B-Class.
BMW 2 series active tourer has short overhangs and relatively long wheelbase which should provide better interior space. BMW signature twin kidney grille are positioned down similar to coupe models from the company. The rear seats can be folded horizontally in 40:20:40 ratio. Rear passengers can also tilt seats backwards. Seating position is slightly higher as compared to other BMW models. The boot volume measures at 468 liters and can be increased to 1,510 liters when rear seats are fold down. This makes it slightly less spacious than B class.
Interior is all new with familiar design cues. The large iDrive operated screen is mounted on the center and is available as an option. It has a direct steering which is free to torque steer. It is also equipped with some smart solutions for packaging, including a reversible luggage compartment floor that hides an extra storage locker. Other optional items include head-up display and panaromic roof. BMW will offer Luxury and Sport trims like other models. M sports package will be available with either 17-inch or 18-inch wheels, 10 mm lowered suspension, sports seats and aerodynamic package. An optional four wheel drive system «xDrive» will also be available.
Initially BMW will offer three engine choices for Active Tourer. The entry level model 218i will be equipped with 1.5 liter three cylinder gasoline engine with 136 hp and 220 Nm(162 lb-ft) of Torque which enable the MPV to achieve 0-60 mph in 9.3 seconds. The fuel consumption is measured at 4.9 liters/100 km with 115 gm/km CO2 emissions. This engine is also available in new Mini and BMW i8. Other gasoline engine in the range is 225i with 231 hp. The diesel engine available during the launch will be 218d with 150 hp and 330 Nm(243 lb-ft) of torque. Few months after the launch, BMW will offer 220i, 216d and 220d. It might also come with a hybrid drive-train in future. Six speed manual transmission will be available as default along-with an optional 8-speed automatic transmission with launch control. BMW will present 2-series active tourer at Geneva Motor Show and would arrive in showrooms this coming September.
